Wayne Thiebaud and Watercolors

Mrs. Habig's 5th grade class got to have some fun today learning about the artist Wayne Thiebaud, and his brightly painted sweets. Now, these students learned about Thiebaud before when they made cupcakes out of clay; so it was fun to revisit him in the 2D world. They also learned how to properly tape down papers they were going to watercolor on and how it helps to keep their papers flat. Here are some of the watercolor paintings from the day!  Watercolors might be my favorite :)

Pablo Picasso Reaches 5th Grade

Just this week, 5th grade has started their Picasso inspired portraits.  5th grade is not only looking at the Cubist portraits Picasso made, but also looking closer at how Picasso would combine a profile view with a straight on view of a portrait (thus making one face look like it has multiple faces).

The 5th graders have been coming up with some really creative stuff!  It's making me feel inspired to make my own work too!  Here's a sneak peak at what the kids are just starting to make.

PTO Accelerated Reader T-Shirt Contest

I've been working feverishly with my 3rd - 5th graders on a collaboration with our school's PTO.  The PTO graciously takes care of the awards and prizes that our students receive for earning points for reading books and taking quizzes on them.  The most coveted of the prizes being the AR T-Shirt!  When the PTO approached me about the students creating the design for the next shirt I LOVED the idea!  And the kids did too!  So we've spent the last couple weeks learning about Graphic Designers and how many of the everyday packages and logos we see were designed by artists.  Here are just a few of my favorites that have been turned in so far...and Mrs. Bates' class working diligently!  PTO will have a hard choice to make!

And I couldn't resist posting this one!  Mr. Corbin, this student thought that you should be on a t-shirt!  Our students love our new media aid so much!

Foreground, Middle Ground, & Background

Fifth graders really worked hard on these projects! First, they painted the backgrounds using tints and shades: creating middle grounds using a silhouette technique: and finally drawing the foreground using color pencils. I'm so proud of them!

All the projects up in the hallway!
